Connecting
The BBS currently accepts connections via telnet and SSH. SSH is the more secure of the two methods as it encrypts the data, but it can be harder to find a client that properly displays the ansi-bbs character set. The easiest way to connect is to use the embedded terminal on this page. For a client that works on multiple computer platforms, I enjoy using SyncTerm. For mobile devices, I tested the fTelnet app for both iOS and Android. Use the following connection parameters for your client:
Address: www.diglet,ca
Telnet Port: 23
SSH Port: 22
New User
The first time you connect, enter "New" as your username. You will be asked some basic questions about your terminal capabilities (The defaults should be good for most cases), and then you can choose your actual username. Once you have answered the questions, it will display some statistics for the BBS, press a key to continue. A randomly generated password will be shown for you and you can choose whether to use that one or enter your own. After you choose a password, you will be shown the default settings for your account. For most people, the defaults should be fine. As a final step, you can choose an ANSI avatar to be displayed with posts that you make, press Q to quit once you are done and the title screen will be displayed, you can press any key to continue. On the next screen you will be shown recent activity on the board, and asked whether you would like to read your mail and scan the boards for new messages (See Message Boards below). And then finally you will be taken to the main menu.
General Navigation
Navigating the BBS is fairly straight forward. The main menu lists all the available commands, starting with the keypress required to activated it. So for example, to navigate into the Role Playing Games section, you would press the R button, which displays a list of available games, which you can choose by number.
Games
Of course the main draw for nostalgia here are the Door Games. I have them split up by genre on the main menu. The instructions for each game should be available within each individual program.
Messages
The BBS contains two sets of message boards, one local to this board where only people on this BBS can see, and one connected to DOVE-Net (an interbbs messaging network), where people from any BBS also connected to DOVE-Net can also see. You can choose a specific message area by pressing J from the main menu, and you will asked to pick Local or DOVE-Net, and then a specific sub-board within the chosen section. The selected board will be displayed on the main prompt:
You can also navigate around the message boards using the arrow keys, with left/right switching between the Local and DOVE-Net areas, and up/down switching between the sub-boards within the current area. From the main menu, hitting the L button will list all the messages on the currently selected board, you can then use the arrows to move up/down the list and hit V/Enter to read the message. Press the ? key to bring up a list of options as well. If you press N from the main menu, it will scan the boards you choose in the options for new messages and display them, hitting P will post a new message to the currently selected board, and hitting the F button will allow you to search for text in messages. If you wish to exclude certain sub-boards from new message scans, hit the & button. From here you can choose which boards will be included in the scan, as well as reset the pointers for the new message scan (e.g. mark all as read).
There is also an email system for sending private mail to other users on the BBS. Press E to navigate into that section. And if other people are currently online, there is a chat system accessed by the C button from the main menu.
Logoff
To disconnect, simply press the O button from the main menu, and select Yes.
